MULTIPLES

front 9-14-09 copyFollowing his wife’s apparent suicide, 43 year-old Richard Moore, a former army special operations officer, leaves the Boston Police Department to become Chief of Police in the little town of Winchendon, Massachusetts. When a local woman dies in a strange automobile accident, Richard’s investigation takes him to the office of the talented and attractive Stephanie Lynn, a Boston Globe investigative reporter. Stephanie steers Richard to an employee of the dead woman’s health insurance provider, and when this results in an attempt on his life and that of the employee, Richard and Stephanie form a loose alliance. As they pursue leads in and around Boston, they barely survive a harrowing series of encounters with corporate felons, hired thugs, and an assassin named Ghost. In the end they are seized and taken to a palatial mansion in the country.
There, they meet Rob Lee, an outlawed rogue CIA operative and Richard’s former covert operations handler. Lee reveals that he is behind the health insurance company’s scheme to manipulate “multiples”, factors that influence its stock values, by killing policyholders who need expensive care. He also reveals that Richard’s wife was one of those killed. Just as he is about to murder them however, a federal assault team breaks into the mansion and a firefight ensues. When it’s over, we learn that the CIA and FBI have used Richard and Stephanie as unwilling bail to trap the highly wanted Lee. In the confusion of the raid, Lee escapes, but Richard now knows that Lee murdered his wife, and, as the novel ends, he vows to find Lee and bring him to justice.
